Seltene, frühe Beschreibung der in der Nähe des niederländischen Stützpunktes in Südafrika lebenden Khoikhoi ("Hottentotten"). Ten Rhyne war Arzt im Dienst der niederländischen Ostindien-Kompanie und hatte auf seiner Reise nach Batavia und Japan den obligatorischen Zwischenstopp am Kap der Guten Hoffnung eingelegt. Er verfaßte u.a. die erste westliche Abhandlung über die Akupunktur und eine gleichfalls bahnbrechende Arbeit über die Lepra in Asien. - Etwas stockfl., Titel gebräunt, Innengelenke mit Wurmspuren.


Scarce treatise on the Hottentots by the Physician W. ten Rhyne who travelled to the Cape in 1673 for the VOC. "Very little is said about the settlement, its government, or the the Dutch inhabitants, and the interest of the work centres in the description of the natural history, and an account of the Hottentots, the latter taking up the greater part of the volume" (Mendelssohn). - Some foxing, some browning to title, worming to inner hinges.
