Schreckenfuchs zählte zu den ersten Anhängern des Kopernikus in Deutschland. Nach S. 332 die beiden Sternbild-Hemisphären-Karten des Johannes Honter eingebunden, die des nördlichen Himmels 1532 datiert, die des südlichen Himmels monogr. "IHC". Die prachtvollen Holzschnitte hatten erstmals in einigen Exemplaren von Petris Ptolemäus-Ausgabe von 1541 Verwendung gefunden und liegen hier noch im Originalzustand vor, lediglich die Titelzeile ist neu gesetzt. "These two woodcut maps are noteworthy for both their geocentrism and their novel constellation style. Whereas Dürer's maps... showed the stellar universe as from the outside, Honter's were the first important printed maps showing the stars as seen from the earth. Other cartographers who quickly adopted Honter's point of view were Piccolomini and Postel... the popularity of Honter's maps can be indicated by the many copies and editions yet known" (Warner). - Gebräunt, stellenw. etwas braunrandig, einige hinterl. kl. Wurmgänge im w. Rand, 1 Karte etwa knittrig u. mit kl. Randeinriß.
First edition to be published by Schreckenfuchs, one of the earliest German followers of Copernicus. Thus this seems to be one of the earliest editions of Ptolemy's astronomical works to be published under the influence of the new theories. Illustrated with Honter's magnificent and important star maps in original state (dated 1532 and monogrammed IHC) but with new setting of title text, first published in Petri's Ptolemy of 1541 (see Warner 132). - Browning, few restored wormholes, slight crease marks and minor marginal tear to one map. 17th cent. limp vellum.
