First French edition of the "Descripcion de las Indias", published simultaneously in Dutch. Expanded with four other works by J. le Maire, P. Ordonez de Cevallos and P. Bertius, the most important of which was the first published account of le Maire's voyage to Tierra del Fuego. 14 maps were close re-engravings after the Spanish edition of 1601 (see Burden for details), added are three maps accompanying the le Maire part, and five engravings in the text. The portrait of le Maire is as often not included, and publ. only in the Dutch ed. according to Sabin & Palau. Of special interest is the engr. Latin title page with a map of the Western Hemisphere, here in its second state of the first issue with privilege on verso. "This small map's chief claim to fame is in being the first map to delineate California as an island" (Burden). - Minor browning in places, light watertaining to outer right margin at last 10 sheets. Small ink annotation to upper printed title, margin fraying at right to page 221/4. Maps in good impressions, only tiny worming to map numbered 1 at lower right edge. Vellum of the late 19th cent., with exlibris La Tremblaie; lightly spotted, somewhat warped.
