Seltene, "wunderschöne... namenlose Karte, die stark erneuernde Züge aufweist... (T.). Erstmals 1574 erschienen, es folgten weitere Ausgaben mit Datierung von 1596 u. 1612 mit nur geänderten oder hinzugesetzten Adressen von S. Pinargenti, A. Bertelli, F. Valegio u. S. Scolari. Die vorliegende Variante mit der eindeutig in 1700 geänderten Jahreszahl bleibt ungenannt u. wirft Rätsel auf, da Scolari bereits 1657 verstorben u. der Verbleib der Platte unbekannt ist. - Mit 2 Wasserzeichen: 3 Halbmonde bzw. Kleeblatt mit 2 Buchstaben. - Bugfalte durch durchschlagende Leimspuren u. Wasserschaden gebräunt bzw. Kolorit dort leicht verblaßt oder verwischt; einige leichte Braunflecken. Rechts u. unten zusätzl. Faltstellen; links unten Einriß im Bildrand u. insges. 3 kl. Wurmlöcher (2 im Bild) hinterklebt.
Scarce map of the region of Verona and Lago di Garda after Bernardo Brognolo (also Brognoli or Brugnoli/o), "è la prima carta a stampa della provincia" (P.) and "senza proprio titolo, che riguarda 'Il Veronese e il Trentino Centro-Meridionale'" (T. p. 14), which served nearly for a century as a model, used by Ortelius (Meurer: since 1575), Magini, Blaeu et al. "Questa carta... occupa un posto di particolare considerazione nel novero della cartografia locale, grazie alla loro ricchezza di informazioni e fedeltà al reale" (T. p. 15).
The most comprehensive listing of editions and copies was given by Dr. Hellwig, Bonn: 1. by Forlani 1574 (in Brit. Mus.); 2. by Pinargenti after Almagià (copy unknown); 3. by A. Bertel(l)i (copy in Venice, Mus. Correr, and our sale 135 no. 4315); 4. by F. Valegio, also dated 1612 (only one copy known in private hands); 5. by S. Scolari 1612 (in Brit. Mus., or earlier according to Woodward). Our copy with the visible signature of Valegio over erasures of a former name, most probably the one of Bertelli, and the clearly retouched date of "MDCC". The latter of course is particular, as Scolari died in 1657, and neither such late issues are so far known nor the whereabouts of the plate. Therefore a further census of all copies of this important map is needed. With 2 watermarks: three crescents in a row (Woodward, Italian watermarks 144) and letter A & I (?) under trefoil (cf. W. 299ff.).
Contemp. colour; wide margined. Somewhat browned at center due to discolouration from paste, and slightly faded resp. blurred colouring caused by water; light spotting in places. 2 additional light folds at right and bottom; repairs to tear affecting image at left border resp. altogether 3 wormholes (2 at center).
