Vicaire V, 341; P. Marais, Livre de Prières tissé (in: Bulletin du Bibliophile, 1889, p. 163-166); Lunenfeld, The Secret War Between Downloading and Uploading, p. 10 f. "The volume is not only an exquisite nineteenth-century reinterpretation of the medieval book of hours, it is also the unknown - and unknowing - origin point for contemporary screen culture... It took A. Roux fifty tries to create the first salable version of this marvel of mixed technological metaphors, wherein Ariadne meets Gutenberg. The product of an industrial era, it simulated medieval content and anticipated by a century the information age" (Lunenfeld). - Hervorragend erhalten.

The first and only successful attempt to produce a perfectly legible book not printed, but entirely woven in silk, black on silvery-grey. An accuracy of one-tenth of a millimeter reached in the weaving procedure was a climax in the development of the Jacquard machines which worked with punch cards, thus anticipating modern computer techniques. More than 100.000 punch cards were used and the Livre de Prières is the first book to be produced by computer controlling. Special binding and glueing procedures were required and 50-60 copies only reached a perfect state. The present one was bound by Kauffmann in aubergine coloured morocco with silver monogram on front cover, gilt inner dentelles and cover edges, gilt edges, burgundy silk doublures and fly-leaves; preserved in the original morocco box lined with silk and velvet. - Morocco box somewhat rubbed, silk lining a bit frayed at hinge. Else in perfect state of preservation.
