Hennepins originaler Reisebericht, französisch 1683 und in wenig zuverlässigen Umarbeitungen 1697/98 als "Nouvelle Découverte" bzw. "Nouveau Voyage" erschienen. Im Rahmen der Erforschung des Mississippi durch La Salle bereiste der Franziskaner den Illinois und den Oberlauf des Mississippi, beschrieb als erster die Niagara-Fälle, führte die Bezeichnung Louisiana in die Literatur und Kartographie ein und berichtete von der Gründung Chicagos (Fort Creve-Coeur). "One of the most important volumes in the early history of North America" (Lande). Die deutsche Ausgabe enthält ferner ab S. 353 die erste Übersetzung des Vorgänger-Berichtes von Marquette/Jolliet, dessen Original 1681 in Thevenots "Recueil de Voyages" erschienen war. Mit Nachstichen der berühmten und seltenen Originalkarten zu den Erstausgaben (Burden 658 u. 659): Hennepins "Tabula exhibens Novam Franciam et Louisianam", die kartograph. Erstbezeichnung der entdeckten Länder von der französischen Vorlage übernehmend; und Marquettes Verlaufskarte des Mississippi ("Tabula exhibens Regiones quasdam recens detectas in America Septentrionali") mit sehr frühen geologischen Einträgen wie "Ferri minerae" oder "Lapides Haematitae". - Teilw. etwas stockfleckig, gering gebräunt, Titel mit Besitzvermerk des 18. Two parts in one volumes. First editions in German of the two most important French explorations of Louisiana, which connected the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River system. The first is Hennepin's most important work, which contains the first printed account of La Salle's travels and discoveries in the upper Mississippi and an important description of the Sioux. The narrative is accompanied by a re-engraving of the "Carte de la Nouvelle France," the first map to name Louisiana. "Published by Andreas Otto, it was derived directly from the Hennepin issued in 1683" (Burden 658). The second part contains Marquette and Joliet's account of their discovery of the Upper Mississippi and its exploration to the Arkansas River in 1673: a translation of the first account of this important discovery, with a re-engraving of the first map to show the Mississippi River and to name Lake Michigan. "The French original was important as the first printed map of the entire Mississippi River. Slightly smaller in size this German issue bears a Latin title, as opposed to the original French one, otherwise it is a faithful likeness" (Burden 659). - Some foxing in places, slight browning, 18th cent. ownership inscription and few small holes to title, numerous blank leaves at rear of volume. Overall a fine copy bound in contemp. vellum over wooden boards, dated 1693, two clasps, new endpapers.
