Der Dominikaner Leonardus (um 1395-1459) war 1454 von Papst Eugen IV. nach Konstantinopel gesandt worden, um dort die Verhandlungen zu einer Beendigung des Schismas zwischen Rom und Byzanz vorzubereiten. "Die begonnenen Verhandlungen wurden aber durch die Belagerung Konstantinopels durch die Türken unterbunden. Es gelang dem Dominikaner, aus Konstantinopel zu fliehen, und aus Chios richtete er diesen Bericht über die Belagerung von Konstantinopel an den Papst" (Göllner). Das kleine Titelporträt zeigt Mehmed II. - Titel mit kl. Restaurierung im w. Rand, Innendeckel mit Schabstelle (entferntes Exlibris). Schönes und breitrandiges Exemplar, aus der Sammlung Sefik E. Atabey (Exlibris).
First edition, with woodcut portrait of Mehmet II on title and woodcut device at end. One of the most important eyewitness accounts of the siege and fall of Constantinople. "This is the earliest separate edition recorded by both the British Library and VD 16" (Navari in Atabey). - Small marginal restoration to title, abrasion to front pastedown caused by removal of a bookplate. A fine copy with wide margins, bound in 19th century polished calf gilt by Petit, successor to Simier. From the library of Sefik E. Atabey.
