(von 2) Fassungen des Druckvermerkes "Typis Pauli Sessii, impensis Authoris.". Ausführliche wissenschaftliche Beschreibung der hellen Nova von 1604, über die Kepler im Vorjahr bereits einen populären Bericht veröffentlicht hatte. Die schöne Himmelskarte zeigt das Sternbild des Schlangenträgers, in dem die Nova beobachtet wurde. - Etwas gebräunt, wenig fleckig, stellenweise schwacher Wasserrand (auch Karte betroffen), Titel mit gelöschten alten Besitzvermerken, dadurch an kleinen Stellen mit Papierergänzungen, Bl. 25/26 weiße Ecke ergänzt. - Provenienz: Hartung & Karl (München) Auktion 1, Kat.-Nr. 424 (1972).
First edition, with a folding celestial map and some woodcut diagrams and text woodcuts. Kepler's detailed description of the nova of October 1604. His "extensive collection of observations and opinions ... A subtitle announced it as: 'a book full of astronomical, physical, metaphysical, meteorological and astrological discussions, glorious and unusual.' That it was. Early chapters described the nova's appearance, astrological significance, and possible origin" (DSB). Two variants of the title-page are recorded, the above with the imprint: "Typis Pauli Sessii, impensis Autoris". No definitive priority has been established. - Overall mild browning, minor staining in places, minor waterstaining in places, deleted ownership inscription to title-page with small paper restorations, p. 25/26 with restored white corner. Bound in contemporary vellum, a bit stained and dusty; recent slip-case. For provenance see above.
