Beecheys Auftrag war es, durch das Beringmeer zu segeln und den von Osten zur Auffindung der NW-Passage anreisenden Sir John Franklin aufzunehmen. Sie näherten sich bis auf 50 Meilen, dann mußte Franklin wegen schlechten Wetters umkehren. Beecheys Bericht enthält wesentliche Nachrichten über Alaska, insbes. die Inselgruppen der Aleuten u. der Pribilof Islands, seinen Besuch auf der Meuterer-Insel Pitcairn einschließlich der Schilderung der Meuterei auf der Bounty von James Adams, des letzten überlebenden Meuterers etc. Vorgebunden: 2 Bll. Travelling to the Bering Strait and beyond, Beechey's expedition was supposed to have met up with Sir John Franklin and Captain Parry, who were expected to arrive from the East. This narrative remains one of "... the most valuable of modern voyages..." (Hill 93) and provides accounts of visits to Pitcairn Island (where Beechey interviewed John Adams, the last surviving member of the mutiny on the Bounty), Tahiti, Alaska, Hawaii, Macao, Okinawa, and the coast of California. Bound with a handwritten letter (1 leaf) from Beechey to Bentley. - Some browning to plates; offsetting to folding maps.
