Norman 1956; DSB VI, 323. - Erste Ausgabe. "With this monumental survey of the stars of the southern hemispere, Herschel completed the task begun by his father William, who fifty years earlier had catalogued the northern celestial hemispere" (Norman). "By 1838 he had swept the whole of the southern sky, catalogued 1,707 nebulae and clusters, and listed 2,102 pairs of binary stars. He carried out star counts, on William Herschel's plan, of 68,948 stars in 3,000 sky areas" (DSB). - Minimal gebräunt.

First edition. With lith. frontispiece and 17 (4 gefalt.) lith. plates. - Insignificant browning. Contemporary blindstamped cloth, gilt title to spine, joints repaired.
