Vallisnieri, im Briefwechsel u.a. mit Scheuchzer und Leibniz, wusste die Funde bereits in einem größeren naturhistorischen Kontext zu deuten und ging nicht mehr von einer einzigen Sintflut aus: "In Dei corpi marini he accepted Fracastoto's concept  that fossil shells found on mountains were there because the land had once been under the sea and had not been carried there by the Flood."
