First edition. Charpentier (1786-1855), professor of geology in Lausanne, as director of the major Swiss salt mines, significantly improved their effectiveness. Together with Agassiz, he studied the glaciers of the Alps and came to the conclusion that the moraines and erratic blocks in the Swiss plains had been brought there by large masses of glacial ice. Despite some minor errors, his and Agassiz's observations became the starting point of modern ice age geology. - Foxing in places, slight browning; ms. notes to endpaper, one of the maps strengthened in one place. Bound in contemp. half-leather, rubbed, some scraping in places.
