Die aus umfangreichen geodätischen und historischen Untersuchungen hervorgegangene Karte (dat. 1762) stellt einen Wendepunkt in der Kartographie Zyperns dar und gilt als erste wissenschaftliche Karte der Mittelmeerinsel, vorliegend im 2. Zustand mit der Bindeanweisung für die Duodez-Ausgabe. - Der vorliegende Band der "Mémoires" ("depuis l'année M.DCCLXI, jusques & compris l'année M.DCCLXIII.) enthält noch drei weitere, ebenfalls mit Karten illustrierte Arbeiten d'Anvilles. "His maps were greatly appreciated by geographers and navigators, and their exactness was confirmed for Italy by the geodesic operations carried out under the pontificate of Benedicte XIV, and for Egypt during Napoleon's campaign in 1799" (DSB I, 176). - Gutes, nur gering gebräuntes und kaum fleckiges Exemplar. D'Anville's importatnt study of Cyprus first published in 1768. Illustrated with an excellent folding map which "expresses a turning point in the cartography of Cyprus, here in its second state. It is an attempt to combine mathematical cartography with literary tradition... This present first scientific map of Cyprus was constructed by Anville on the basis of this Greek study, together with the assistance of a great amount of ancient and new information" (Scutari in Ioannou-Coll.). - Complete volume, including 3 other studies by d'Anville, each illustrated with a map. - Occasional minor browning or staining, slight offsetting to maps. A fine copy bound in contemp. calf, slightly rubbed and worn, 3 small wormholes to lower joint.
