Klassisches Handbuch des holländischen Weltumseglers van Linschoten, das nach der ersten holländischen Ausgabe von 1596 in vielen Ausgaben und Übersetzungen weite Verbreitung fand. “This inestimable book, a treasure of all the learning respecting the East and West-Indies and the navigation thither, at the end of the 16th century, has been in the highest esteem for nearly a century, and was given to each ship sailing to India, as a log-book" (Muller, Books on America 2187). Enthält Plancius' Weltkarte von 1594, gest. von J. van Deutecum (Shirley 187; Schilder, MCN I, S. 30f. u. VII, S. 205 ff.; New Hollstein, Doetecum IV, 922) sowie Karten von Südost- und Südwest-Afrika ("Delineatio orarum...Natal" u. "Typus orarum maritimarum Guineae"), Südasien ("Delineantur in hac tabula, orae maritimae Abexiae"), China und Indonesien ("Exacta et accurata delineatio... China, Cauchinchina, Camboja") sowie Südamerika ("Delineatio omnium orarum totius australis partis Americae"). Ferner Pläne und Ansichten von Angra do Heroismo/Terceira, Ascension, Goa, Madagaskar und St. Helena (2), die restlichen Tafeln zeigen Eingeborene, Sitten und Gebräuche, Botanik, Zoologie etc. - Etwas gebräunt u. stockfleckig, Ränder und insbes. im Bund stellenw. bis in den Text etwas wasserfl. Wenige kl. Rand- oder Faltstellenläsuren (vereinzelt hinterlegt), 1. Titel mit hinterlegten Wurmlöchlein im Text, S. 41/2 im Bund eingerissen. Einige Tafeln stärker gebräunt bzw. fleckig, die große Vogelschauans. von Goa dazu mit mehreren teils rep. Faltststellenläsuren. In Tl. 1 fehlt die eventuell nicht allen Exemplaren beigebundene Nordpolkarte ("Delineatio cartae trium navigationem per Batavos"), außerdem fehlen S. 43/44. Rare Titelauflage (reissue) of the first Latin edition of 1599, with title page of part 2 remaining unchanged. Indispensable work. 2 parts in one volume. Richly illustrated with 2 title vignettes of sailing ship, engraved coat-of-arms, full-page portrait, 6 (of 7) engr. folding maps and 36 (31 double-page, 5 folding) engr. plates. - Some browning and foxing, marginal waterstaining partly affecting text (esp. at fold). A few marginal or folding tears (a few repaired), some small wormholes to first title repaired,  tears at fold to pp. 41/42. Stronger browning resp. spotting to some of the plates, large bird's-eye-view of Goa with several defects to foldings and margins. Part 1 lacking map of the north polar regions and pp. 43/44. Bound in contemporary vellum, slightly stained and rubbed, short ink notes to front endpapers, front fly-leaf with added corner tear, lacking back fly-leaf.
