Anton Ignaz Melling aus Karlsruhe weilte als Zeichner und Baumeister der Sultanin Hadidsche etwa 18 Jahre in Konstantinopel; später wurde er Hof- und Kabinettmaler der Kaiserin Josephine und Ludwigs XVIII. Die schönen, bei Didot l'Aine gedruckten Kupfer sind von den besten damaligen Künstlern gestochen, darunter Duplessis-Berteaux, Desmaisons, Gouaz, Duparet, Godefroy u.a. Sie zeigen Gesamt- und Detailansichten von Konstantinopel und seinen Vororten, Innenansichten des Serail, Harem, Hippodrom, Zeremonien und Volksfeste, Reiterspiele, ein türkisches Café u.a.; ferner etliche Ansichten des Bosporus und seiner Hauptorte, oft von Standpunkten aufgenommen, die nur ein langjähriger Kenner der Gegend wie Melling ausfindig machen konnte. Einige Taf. liegen vor der Nummerierung vor, bei fast allen ist diese mit Bleistift ergänzt. - Vor allem in den Rändern etwas stockfleckig, hier u. da stärker bzw. Drucktitel, ca. 10 Taf., die 3 Ktn. u. Pläne sowie. einige Textbll. insgesamt. betroffen. Blattränder durchgehend u. ca. 10 Textbll. insgesamt gebräunt, letztes Textbl. mit Einriss im Bund u. Wasserfleck. Wenige Taf. mit kl. Randeinriss, Taf. 1 u. 27 mittig mit Knitterfalte, Taf. 22 mit schmalem Randausriss. Ohne den gest. Titel zum Tafelbd. Breitrandiges Exemplar.

The most beautiful illustrated work of the 19th century on Constantinople and its surroundings. 2 volumes. "Melling was introduced to the sister of the Sultan by de Hubsch, Danish ambassador at Constantinople, and he was chosen as her architect in 1795. He was later brought to the notice of Selim III and was allowed to study what he wished, including the interior of the harem. His work contains some of the earliest interior views and plans of the harem and several of the Sultan's palaces. This is an impressive work" (Atabey). Some of the plates before numbering, and most of them with pencil numbering added. - Some mainly marginal foxing, heavier in places resp. title, c. 10 plates, the 3 maps and plans, and a few text leaves throughout. Marginal browning, and total browning to c. 10 leaves of text; final text leaf with tear at fold and waterstain. A few marginal tears to plates, crease fold at center to pl. 1 & 27. Plates vol. without engr. title. A broadmargined copy bound in late 19th century half-calf, somewhat rubbed and worn.
