Tintenfische mit prächtigen Holzschnitt-Illustrationen, erstmals 1606 erschienen. "Although Aldrovandi is not identified with any revolutionary discoveries, his work as a teacher and as the author of volumes that constitute an irreplacable cultural patrimony earns him a place among the fathers of modern science. Perhaps most importantly he was among the first to attempt to free the natural sciences from the stifling influence of the authority of textbooks, for which he substituted, as far as possible, direct study and observation of the animal, vegetable, and mineral worlds" (DSB I, 108-110). - Stellenw. schwach stockfleckig, tlw. leichter Wasserfleck im Rand. Kupfertitel mit 2 schwachen Wasserflecken, unten knapp beschnitten und mit Läsuren. Zweite Hälfte mit schwachem unauffälligen Wasserrand oben, die letzten ca. 30 Bll. stärker betroffen und mit einem weiteren Wasserrand unten.

Later edition, with engr. title and c. 600 woodcuts of shells etc. in the text and printer's device. - Faint foxing in places, some waterstaining to margins. Two faint watermarks and some marginal lesions to title. Waterstaining to upper margins of second half, stronger and with a second one to lower margins of last c. 30 leaves. Contemporary calf, very worn.
