First edition of a controversial publication by the young natural history artist who took part in James Cook's first circumnavigation 1768-1771, and died on the homeward voyage. His brother Stanfield battled against Sir Joseph Banks, the Admiralty and Sir John Hawkesworth to publish this journal and a selection of Sydney's outstanding drawings which he finally received back from Banks. "He made numerous drawings of botanical and other subjects, including landscapes and portraits of native chiefs" (Hill Coll. 224). - Faint browning, some offsetting from the plates, plate 27 with closing tear and strengthened with fine cloth. 2 bookplates. Printed on strong paper with wide margins bound in somewhat later marbled half-calf gilt, gilt title to spine labels, minor rubbing.
