"John Frederik Miller, the son of John Miller the botanical artist, was employed by Sir Joseph Banks and thus had access to the numerous zoological specimens that Banks constantly received. He painted and engraved these subjects, the majority of which are birds, and probably executed the coloring of the plates as well. The descriptive text is by George Shaw, a founding member of the Linnean Society and a keeper of natural history at the British Museum." (BML). Die meisten Tafeln (41) zeigen exotische u. außergewöhnliche Vögel. Unter den anderen Tierdarstellungen auch etliche Pinguine. "Miller... had accompanied Banks and Solander as draughtsman on the voyage to Iceland" (Anker). - Wie meist ohne die 6 Bll. Tafelliste u. With 60 engr, col. plates, 41 of which showing birds. - Faint brownstaining here and there, small marginal tears in places (mostly carefully repaired), only at plate 20 and 30 affecting white margin of illustration, small loss of corner to plate 34. Bound in contemp. half red morocco, spine gilt and with green label; boards and turn-ins tooled gilt, minor rubbing, some wear to rear board, endpaper renewed.
