"The Clein-Koberger editions of the 'Hortulus' are representative of a publishing area which may be considered the German equivalent of the French Horae B. M. V. The text was composed of an Office of the Virgin and a variety of popular prayers, including prayers of individual saints. The early Clein editions are illustrated with blocks which may have been supplied by A. Koberger or cut by French artists working in the German techniques. With the introduction of the Springinklee-Schön cuts in 1516, these editions are no longer French but German illustrated books" (Mortimer). Schöner Druck mit Stundenbuchcharakter: Der ganz in Schwarz-Rot gedruckte Text auf allen vier Seiten mit wechselnden Bordüren umgeben, von denen Mortimer 25 verschiedene zählt (davon einige 1515 datiert). - Stellenw. leicht gebräunt, vereinzelt fleckig; erste Bll. unten mit schwachem Wasserfleck bis in die Bordüre, letzte Bll. mit winzigem Wurmlöchlein am unteren Blattrand. Seitlich u. oben teilw. etwas knapp und hin u. wieder die Bordüre auch leicht angeschnitten, teilw. oben auch die Foliierung abgeschnitten. Auf Bl. 85r 3 Zeilen in Tinte gestrichen. Letztes Bl. mit 2 ergänzten Randausrissen (mit 2 kl. Bildverlusten in der Druckermarke). Fehlen 1 Bl. Vorstücke (c2) sowie Bl. 84-85 (m4-5) inkl. einem Holzschnitt. Alter hs. Kloster-Besitzvermerk auf dem Titel.

With large woodcut on title-page, 2 calendar woodcuts, 81 (of 82) woodcuts by Sprininklee, Schön et al; and 6 quite small woodcuts. Each page within woodcut borders, woodcut device on final page. - Some browning and occasional staining in places; slight dampstain to lower margin affecting bordure to first leaves; final leaves with tiny wormstitch to lower margin. Trimmed at top and side, bordures partly slightly shaved resp. partly with loss of foliation. Ink cross out to 3 lines on fol. 85r; 2 rep. tears to final leaf (with 2 small losses to device). Lacking leaves c2, and numbered ll. 84-85 incl. 1 woodcut. Bound in 19th century red morocco, spine and edges gilt; somewhat rubbed in places.
