Pioneering Amazon Photographs

Wolff, Explorers and entrepeneurs behind the camera, Berlin 2015, S. 26ff.). - Umfangreiche Auswahl aus den Aufnahmen, die der deutsche Fotograf Albert Frisch (1840-1918) während einer fotografischen Expedition in den Jahren 1867 und 1868 im Gebiet des oberen Amazonas machte, womit er zum Pionier der Fotografie in dieser Gegend wurde. Vertrieben wurden die Fotografien von Georg Leuzinger (1813-1892), einem gebürtigen Schweizer, der 1840 in Rio de Janeiro eine Kunst- und Schreibwarenhandlung gegründet hatte und seine Geschäftstätigkeit später auch auf einen Verlag, eine Druckerei etc. ausweitete; etwa 1865 hatte er auch mit der Produktion und dem Vertrieb von Fotografien begonnen. Etwa zur selben Zeit wurde Frisch, der schon einige Jahre als Fotograf in Argentinien gearbeitet hatte, von Leuzinger als Fotograf angestellt.
Albert Frisch wurde 1868 von Leuzinger mit einer offiziellen Expedition mitgeschickt, die unter Leitung seines Schwiegersohns Franz Keller(-Leuzinger) von Manaus aus den Rio Madeira befahren sollte. Frisch hingegen fuhr mit nur zwei Begleitern von Manaus aus den Amazonas entlang bis Tabatinga an der peruanischen Grenze und fotografierte auf dem Rückweg. Die Ausbeute waren über 120 Glasnegative. Aus diesen wurden später 98 ausgewählt, um sie zu vertreiben (die Nummern 99 und 100, die zweitweise auch auftauchten, waren Collagen, die F. Keller zusammenstellte). Albert Frisch reiste 1870 nach Deutschland zurück, um sich in der Reproduktion von Fotografien weiterzubilden, und blieb dort. Die Firma Leuzinger vertrieb seine Amazonasfotografien bis etwa 1890.
"Between 1867 and 1868 Albert Frisch produced over 120 negatives on his expedition through the Upper Amazon region. This is an extraordinary, ground-breaking achievement if only from a logistical and technical perspective. Frisch worked with the collodion process ... This meant that it was absolutely essential to have a portable photo laboratory, consisting of a darkroom and an extensive arsenal of photographic chemicals, bowls and working utensils. Together with the heavy photo equipment and the fragile glass negatives, all this was transported on the rowing boat along the Amazon during the expedition and throughout the entire 10,000 kilometer journey from Rio de Janeiro to Tabatinga and back, without suffering any damage ... Another striking feature of the entire series of negatives produced by Frisch is the incredibly wide range of themes and motifs. These transform his images into a historical photo-reportage which, even today, provides valuable insight on the European perspective of the Upper Amazon region at the start of the last third of the 19th century. The first major theme in Frisch’s series focuses on the inhabitants of the Upper Amazon. As well as shooting images of the four different ethnic groups he referred to as 'wild' (Ticuna, Miranha, Caixana, Umpqua), Frisch also took photographs of 'half-civilized indigenous people' and the hybrid population known as the 'Tapuyas' ... A second major motif are the fauna and flora of the Upper Amazon, i. e. the natural resources of the tropical rainforest. He photographed river species such as Amazon crocodiles, giant pirarucu fish or sea cows ... The third major motif of the Amazon photographs can be described as 'modern infrastructure' or 'civilization'. It comprises shots of the provincial capital, Manaus, and other smaller towns and villages, which also map out the stops of the steamship liner that travelled along the Upper Amazon River" (Kohl, First images 30). Im vorliegenden Album sind Fotografien zu allen drei von Kohl erwähnten Themen enthalten, etwa 27 Fotografien sind einzelnen Bäumen oder Tieren gewidmet. "The anthropological and ethnological images clearly had great appeal, if one takes the number of photographs housed in various collections and archives as an indication of popularity. The shots of flora and fauna, however, feature less frequently, and the views of towns and cities, hardly at all" (Kohl, First images 32).
Dem vorliegenden Album ist eine gedruckte Liste mit ausführlichen Titeln und Beschreibungen vorgebunden, die den folgenden Titel trägt: "Solimões ou Alto Amazonas e Rio Negro. Photographies faites pour le compte de la maison G. Leuzinger, de Rio de Janeiro, par Mr. Albert Frisch qui a parcouru 1,600 kilomêtres de ces grand fleuves dans une petit embarcation avec 2 hommes, au milieu de tribus sauvages". Diese Angebotsliste umfasst nur mehr 93 Nummern: 1-98 ohne die Nummern 41, 42, 70, 71, 76 (vgl. Kohl, Amazonasbilder 1868, Textband, S. 220 mit Abb. des Einbands, u. Bildband, Abb. II.105 mit Abb. der Liste).
Offensichtlich konnte der Käufer das Albums aus der Liste auswählen, welche Fotografien in seinem Album enthalten sein sollen. (Auch wenn drei Kartonblätter offensichtlich entfernt wurden, hat dieses Album nie alle Fotografien enthalten.) Die Fotografien im vorliegenden Album sind auf dem Trägerkarton handschriftlich in deutscher Sprache bezeichnet und mit Nummern versehen, die weitgehend der gedruckten Liste entsprechen. Da die Numerierungen nicht ganz korrekt sind, geben wir die Nummern nach dem Teil II im Bildband von "Amazonasbilder 1868". Das Album enthält: Nr. 2, 3, 9-11, 13-16, 20-39, 42-45, 47-61, 67-69, 73-80, 82, 83, 85, 87-97 (davon folgende Varianten: 11 ohne Kollage, 13a, 16.1, 20a, 22a, 24a, 27b, 31 [gedreht], 38 ohne Kollage, 39.3, 42-42 ohne Kollage, 45a, 60a, 77b, 85b.2, 87a, 89b, 90a). Das Bild Nr. 74, der rechte Teil des Panoramas ist doppelt vorhanden (oben nicht mitgezählt), dafür ist die Nr. 72, der linke Teil, leider nicht vorhanden. Interessant ist, dass die Nr. 42 und 76 im Album enthalten sind, obwohl sie aus der gedruckten Liste entfallen sind. Bei der Datierung des Albums haben wir einen in den Innendeckel montierten Lederstreifen mit dem goldgeprägten Firmennamen "G. Leuzinger & Filhos" berücksichtigt. Die Aufnahme der Söhne in die Firma erfolgte 1874. Ein Papierschildchen, ebenfalls im Innendeckel, gibt die Adresse an mit: "G. Leuzinger & Filhos / 31 & 36 / Rua d'Ouvidor / Rio de Janeiro". - Etwa 10 Fotografien etwas fleckig, auch durch Retuschen, Nr. 42, 49 u. 92 stärker fleckig; Nr. 20, 68 u. 82 mit kleinem Verklebungsschaden im Bild. Vorsatz mit Stempel eines Klosters.

Album with 73 chosen photographs taken by Albert Frisch on the Upper Amazon 1867 and 1869. Much rechearch on Albert Frisch's Amazon photographs has been done by Frank Stephan Kohl in the last years (see German description). Printed after 1873. No. 74, i.e. the right part of the panorama of Manaus is present twice (though counted only once), therefore is no. 72, the left part, missing. - Some staining to about 10 photographs, more severe to nos. 42, 49 and 92; nos. 20, 68 and 82 with some loss of image due to adhesion; some foxing or soiling to cardboards in places. Original green calf album gilt, some rubbing, stamp of a monastery to endpaper.
