Shirley, M.WAG-1a Anm. - Äußerst seltene erste französische Ausgabe des als "Spiegel der Zeevaerdt" bekannten Seeatlas und nautischen Handbuchs, epochemachendes Werk in der Geschichte der nautischen Kartographie. "Eine Wendemarke auf dem Gebiete der Seekartographie. Jede Karte bot eine Fülle echter Informationen" (Seifert, Karte als Kunstwerk S. 46). Die Ausgabe wurde von Bellère (Druck des Textes) und C. Claesz (Druck der Kupfer) gemeinsam publiziert. Entgegen Koeman unser Exemplar am Schluss von Teil 2 mit "Extrait du Privilege". Enthält nach einer Übersichtskarte von Europa im Hochformat (nach Hollstein im 2. Zustand von 2; mit hinzugefügten lateinischen Bezeichnungen) eine nahezu lückenlose Aufnahme der europäischen Atlantik-, Nord- und Ostseeküsten. Alle Karten mit meist je 2 Rollwerkskartuschen sowie reichem figürlichem und heraldischem Schmuck, unten rechts mit Kartennummerierung u. unterhalb mit Legende für die Küstenprofile (meist im vorletzten von 4-9 von Hollstein aufgeführten Zuständen). "Thanks to the unparalleled skill of the engravers, Baptist and Johannes van Deutecom, the original ms. charts by Waghenaer were transformed into the most beautiful maps of the period" (Koeman S. 469). Die in dieser Ausgabe neu hinzugekommene Kaarte *XIX und Karte 20-22 aus Teil 1 hier am Beginn von Teil 2 eingebunden. - Text anfangs etwas gebräunt, gest. Titel stärker; teilw. etwas fleckig. Titel u. erstes Bl. gelockert sowie in den Rändern ausgefranst; Titel auch mit langem Randeinriss, rechts mit alter Num. u. Eintragungen in Tinte. S. 1/2 fehlt die untere Hälfte mit Text. Ränder teils etwas wasserfleckig, bei den meisten Karten auch bis in das Bild, anfangs u. gegen Ende stärker; die 2 Textkupfer u. 1 Holzschnitt ebenfalls betroffen. Ab Kte. 25 kl. Wurmspuren in den w. Rändern. Europa-Kte. knapp bzw. oben u. unten leicht angeschnitten, unten auch kl. Ausriss, 5 Ktn. mit kl. Rand- u./od. Bugeinrissen im w. Unterrand, Kte. 4 (Flandern) mittig mit hinterlegtem Fehlstreifen (mit etwas Bildverlust), Kte. 22 mittig mit leichter Knitterfalte, Kte. 42 mit kl. ergänztem Randausriss (ohne Bildverlust). Die ganzseitige Kompass-Darstellung vorliegend ohne Volvelle. Alle Ktn. mit Plattenton, nur etwa 15 Ktn. im Abdruck etwas flau, alle anderen in guten, kräftigen Abdrucken. Im vord. Innenspiegel Schenkungsvermerk, datiert 1816.

Two parts in 1 volume, first French edition of this scarce pilot book. This French edition was a joint publishing by Bellère (letterpress) and Claesz (copperplate printing). Complete with 2 engraved titles, 2 full-page engravings (the compass depiction without volvelle) and 2 full-page woodcuts in the text, and 47 double-page engraved maps with numbering at lower right and legend printed below. - Text somewhat browned at beginning, heavier to title; some staining in places. Title and first leaf loosend and margins frayed, title also with long marginal tear, at right with old numbering and notes in ink; p. 1/2 lacking lower half of text. Some waterstaining to margins, also affecting most maps and reaching into image, heavier at beginning and towards the end; text engravings and 1 woodcut also affected. From map 25 onwards some small worm traces to blank margins. Map of Europe trimmed, at top and bottom slightly shaved, also with small tear at bottom. Small marginal and/or centerfold tears to around 5 maps, map 4 (Flanders) with narrow strip missing at center added (with some loss of image), slight crease fold at center to map 22; small marginal tear (without loss of image) to map 42. The full-page compass depiction lacking volvelle. Maps somewhat toned, impression of c. 15 maps somewhat weak, the others in fine and dark impressions. Donation note to front paste-down dated 1816. Bound in contemporary limp vellum, browned and stained, somewhat wavy, hole to back cover, tear to upper joint at the bottom, lacking ties.
