Bedeutender Sammelband für die frühe Orientalistik mit den 3 ersten Schriften Postels, die seinen Ruhm als Pionier der Philologie begründeten und den Beginn der Sprachwissenschaft in Frankreich markieren, alle in ersten Ausgaben. Zu seiner Zeit der Geistesverwirrung bezichtigt, wird Postel heute von arabistischer nicht weniger als von hebraistischer Seite geachtet: "versatile and learned, the first great Arabist of the late Renaissance" (Hamilton 7); "an outstanding exponent of the Christian Kabbalah... one of the impressive and influential personalities of the Renaissance" (Encyclopedia Judaica XIII, 932).

Postel is not unaware of its importance: a woodcut on the first title-page reproduces in six exotic languages the adage In magnis voluisse sat est. The book presents in undeveloped form some of the most important ideas he later worked out more fully: the derivation of all languages from Hebrew, the urgency of the Moslem peril, the importance of languages as an instrument of world unity, and the need for sending missionaries to the Mohammedans. ... Although all the bibliographies list the two works separately, they form a close unit, and refer to each other (cui haec praefixa volo, Alphabetum leaf B1). With woodcut title-vignette, woodcut Arabic lettering and illustrated woodcut initials. - I. Partly washed, brownish spots and dampmarks to the unwashed parts, some dust-soiling, repaired tear-out at bottom margin and old owner's notice to first title page. II. Washed, still some larger faint brownish stains remaining, later folding plate tipped in. III. occasional dampmarking to inner margin. - Bound with: Single part of the Hebrew bible by Estienne 1539. 19th cent. dark green half-morocco, spine gilt, corners restored; Annotations and bookmarks to front endpapers.
