Die Auflage teilten sich Elzevir in Amsterdam - der auch gedruckt hatte - und Le Gras in Paris. "Descartes believed the soul to be a definite entity, giving rise to thoughts, feelings, and acts of volition. He was one of the first to regard the brain as an organ integrating the functions of mind and body" (GM). "The work also contains the first use of the word 'reflex' in connection with the action of the nervous system" (Norman). - Leicht gebräunt u. stellenw. leicht stockfleckig; Titel mit längerem restaurierten Einriss sowie Wappenstempel, Besitzvermerk u. Exlibris. - Aus der Bibliothek des französischen Hebraisten François Masclef (1663-1728) mit einem 1729 datierten Nachlassexlibris, nach dem das Buch der Abtei Saint-Riquier (Somme) geschenkt worden war.
