Anlass der Reise war der tragische Tod des hawaiianischen Königs Kamehamea II und seiner Frau, die während eines Staatsbesuches in London an Masern erkrankten und verstarben. Auf Veranlassung der englischen Regierung wurden die sterblichen Überreste nach Hawaii überführt und gleichzeitig ein wissenschaftlicher Bericht über das von Cook als Sandwich-Inseln getaufte Archipel verfasst. - Leicht gebräunt bzw. stockfleckig, stellenw. stärker; hier u. da kl. Kamehamea II of Hawaii and his queen, Kamamalu, were on a visit to London in 1824 when they both died of the measles, for which they had no immunity. This voyage, with the cousin of the poet Lord George Gordon Byron in command, was undertaken by the British government specifically to return their bodies to the Hawaiian Islands" (Forbes). - Some browning and foxing, heavier in places.
