Jacques Arago (1790-1854) nahm als Zeichner unter der Leitung Louis de Freycinets an einer Expedition teil, einer Weltumsegelung, die zwischen 1817 und 1820 mit den Schiffen "Uranie" und "Physicienne" stattfand. Die Tafeln zeigen Ansichten, Kostüme, Porträts und Eingeborenenbräuche etc. aus Südamerika (Paraguay u. Brasilien), den pazifischen Inseln (Melanesien, Polynesien) und Australien. - Etwas gebräunt u. stockfleckig (auch die Tafeln), oben durchgängig mit schmalem Feuchtigkeitsrand.

First and only English edition. With lith. map and 25 lith. plates. Arago's account of his voyage to Australia and the Pacific with the Freycinet expedition of 1817-1820. Arago's illustrated narrative preceded the official account by two years; and went on to become one of the best-selling voyage books of the nineteenth-century. The plates show views, costumes, portraits and indigenous customs etc. from South America (Paraguay and Brazil), Pacific Islands (Melanesia, Polynesia) and Australia. "The Hawaian portion of the text... records impressions of the artist's stops on Hawaii, Maui, and Guam, and the Marianas Islands" (Forbes). - Some browning and foxing (also to plates), some marginal waterstaining at top throughout. Bound in recent half-calf gilt to style, old boards.
