Die französische Expedition vollendete zusammen mit dem Konkurrenzunternehmen Englands unter Flinders die kartographische Erforschung der australischen Südküste. Péron starb über der Auswertung der vor allem zoologisch bedeutenden Ausbeute der Reise, der Text wurde von Freycinet abgeschlossen. Dieser brachte 1812-15 einen weiteren Band mit eigenem Atlas zu Navigation & Geographie heraus. Die prachtvollen Tafeln (num. II-XLI) zeigen Küstenprofile, Eingeborene, Ethnologisches, Fauna sowie Plan und 2 (1 gefalt.) Ansichten von Sidney. Der Kartenteil, zunächst als mehrteilige Tafel 1 geplant, erschien dann aber als Abfolge von 14 Einzelkarten mit eigenem Verzeichnis. Er enthält die berühmte "Carte Générale de la Nouvelle Hollande" von Freycinet. "The French, while detaining Flinders on the island of Mauritius with his manuscript maps of Australia, gave priority to the publishing of maps, which promoted de Freycinet's mapping and naming of features of the eastern half of Australian's coastline. The promotion of names such as 'Terre Napoléon' and 'Cape Bonaparte' greatly concerned the British in that they feared French claims to this territory would soon follow." With 2 engraved titles, engr. portrait, 2 folding tables, 40 (2 double-page) engr. plates (including 23 colour stipple-engravings finished by hand) and 14 (2 folding) maps. Important French expedition which helped to complete the mapping of the south coast of Australia. The present travel account was begun by Péron and completed after his death by Freycinet, who also published a scientific supplement on navigation and geography with its own atlas in 1812-15. - Some foxing, slight browning to text in places. Double-page views of Sidney and Timor with small holes at centerfold; some foxing to folding maps, first one with 2 (1 longer) tears to folding at center, small tear to folding and margin of 2nd one. Bound in contemporary half-calf (atlas somewhat differently), spines gilt, slightly rubbed.
