Zukunftsweisend auf das neue Jahrhundert, wurde das Titelblatt auf 1900 vordatiert, die Auslieferung durch den Verlag erschien aber bereits am 4. November 1899 in einer Auflage von nur 600 Stück. Der Verkauf verhielt sich recht schleppend, so dass erst im Jahr 1909 eine Neuauflage nötig wurde. "Although not published until 1900 'The Interpretation of Dreams' was virtually complete in all essentials at the beginning of 1896. Extending the wish-fulfillment nature of day-dreams to night-dreams, Freud differentiated the two kinds of wish: those in day-dreams being open and conscious, while the less pleasant subjects were repressed, to be released from the sub-conscious only in sleep ... This is unquestionably Freud's greatest single work.
