Kartenschmuck prachtvoll altkol. 1 Bl., S. 13-24 (so komplett). Alter Prgt., etwas fleckig u. Deckel etwas aufgebogen, neue Vorsätze, vord. freies Vorsatz etwas knitterfaltig u. mit Randläsuren, Bindebandreste.

Shirley, M.DON-2b. - Eine von 2 Varianten desselben Jahres des berühmten und äußerst seltenen, erstmals 1659 erschienenen See-Atlas, den Doncker fortwährend aktualisierte und erweiterte. "Doncker's charts were the most up-to-date in the second half of the 17th century. Although there is some similarity to those charts published by Van Loon, Goos, Lootsman, and Doncker, the latter's charts are original... The consciousness of the high demand of correctness is reflected by the development of Doncker's sea atlas, given hereafter" (Koeman IV, S. 154). Mit der dekorativen Weltkarte von de Wit von 1660 (Shirley 421) und den seltenen Seekarten der Weltmeere. Fünf Karten zeigen nordamerikanische Gebiete: Grönland (Burden 337.2), westlicher Atlantik (B. 338.1), Karibik (B. 339.1), Westküste mit Kalifornien als Insel (B. 340.1) und Neu-Niederlande (B. 348.1); ferner hervorzuheben die Karten der Bucht von Biskaya, des Europäischen Nordmeeres (Tooley, Scandinavia 177), des Indischen Ozeans (östl. Teil s. Tooley, Printed Maps of Australia 451), des westlichen u. östlichen Mittelmeers, der Kanarischen Inseln und Südamerikas. Insgesamt sind 20 der Karten bereits in der holländischen Ausgabe von 1660 enthalten und 12 bis 1665 neu hinzugekommen. Alle Karten (vom Verlag?) auf dickeres Papier aufgezogen u. aufgefalzt. - Etwas gebräunt u. fleckig, Karten vereinzelt u.Text insgesamt stärker; Ränder vor allem oben etwas wasserfl. (davon auch die Weltkte. betroffen), teilw. leicht ausgefranst sowie hier u. da mit kl. Läsuren. Titel mit Plattenrandbruch u. kl. Randeinriss, beide hinterlegt. Weltkarte unten mit längerem rep. Bug- u. Randeinriss bis in das Bild, Westafrika mit 2 kl. Wurmgängen im Bildrand.

Doncker's famous and scarce sea atlas, one of two variants with date 1666. With engraved title-border and 32 double-page engr. maps, all in fine contemporary outline colouring, cartouches and map decorations coloured throughout. Including de Wit's decorative double-hemisphere world map and 5 maps of North American interest. All maps laid down on thicker paper (by the publisher?) and on guards.- Some browning and spotting, heavier to printed text and a few maps; some marginal waterstaining especially at top (also affecting world map), some slight fraying and occasional small tears. Title with small marginal tear and crack to platemark, both rep.; world map with 2 longer rep. marginal tears at lower center, map of West Africa with 2 small wormholes to image. Old vellum, somewhat stained, covers bowed, new pastedowns, front fly-leaf somewhat creased and with marginal tears, remnants of ties.
