S. 1241 sowie Tooley, Mapmakers III, 287 f. - Der seltene Teil 1 (von insgesamt 6) des ersten, die südliche Schifffahrt behandelnden Bandes des populären English Pilot mit Seekarten der Küsten Großbritanniens, Hollands, Flanderns, Spaniens und Portugals, den Kanarischen Inseln, Madeira und Kapverden. Der English Pilot war der erste große Seeatlas, der in England produziert wurde und bestand in seiner endgültigen Form aus fünf separaten und jeweils mehrere Teile umfassenden Bänden. "The English Pilot atlases of the firm of Mount & Page form a complex series... Many of the charts derive from those which had apeared in earlier atlases by John Seller from 1671 onwards. After Seller ran into financial difficulties his stock was taken over by a consortium of publishers... However, by 1716 nearly all extant plates had come into the hands of the firm of Mount & Page. They continued publication under successive family names with limited revision to the plates until almost the end of the eighteenth century" (Shirley). Rare first part (of 6) of the first book of the English Pilot with 24 (4 folding, 18 double-page, 2 in the text) engraved maps (on 7 of them wind roses and occasionally other details with touches of hand colour), and many woodcut coastal profiles in the text. - Light browning throughout, occasionally light spotting and a few minor repairs. Some offsetting to maps, a few also with underlinings in red or short pencil annotations; lower border of 1st map slightly shaved and ms. diagram of wind directions mounted on blank side margin. Bound in early 20th century old-style calf with spine label, somewhat rubbed, corners slightly worn. Mounted ms. index, and 20th century ownership inscription and bookplate to front-pastedown.
