"Bode's Uranographia, successor to the celestial atlases of Bayer, Hevelius, and Flamsteed, was the most extensive and the last great atlas of its kind. Consequently later atlases designed for popular astronomy were limited to naked-eye stars and particularly notable nebulas, while those designed for professional astronomer charted all known celestial objects, more rational boundaries, and hardly any constellation figures" (Warner). - Leicht stockfleckig, Ränder sowie Titel u. Text stärker; Blattränder etwas gebräunt. Kte. 2 (nördl. Sternenhimmel) unten bis über den Plattenrand beschnitten, Kte. 18 mit Knitterfalte neben dem Bug.

A fine example of one of the most important celestial atlases ever published. With double-page engraved title, 20 double-page engr. charts (2 general sheets of each hemisphere, the 18 other maps making up a detailed wall-map of the celestial world) and 2 leaves of text. - Light foxing, a bit heavier to title, text and margins; some marginal browning. Map 2 cut into platemark at bottom, no. 18 with creasing beside centerfold. Contemporary half-calf, somewhat rubbed and worn, occasional stains.
