Krivatsy. - Erste und einzige Ausgabe dieses außerordentlich seltenen Werks des englischen Schriftstellers, Astrologen, Okkultisten und Rosenkreuzers, von Rare Book Hub seit 1971 kein Exemplar auf dem Auktionsmarkt verzeichnet. Vorliegend Druckvariante mit dem 1. Titel wie oben angeführt und dem Verlegernamen Samuel Ferris, der sich offenbar die Auflage mit Th. Whittlesey teilte. "This is an excellent work and by many considered his best. It starts with a Chemical Dictionary; then Book I deals with philosophy; Book II Numbers a reprint of his work, the R.C. 'Axiomata,' with a fine plate; Book III, Long Life; Book IV, Virtue of Minerals; Book V, Gold and Rosicrucian Medicines; Book VI, The Rosie Cross Uncovered, with a most charming piece at the end, called 'The Rosie Crucian's Prayer to God.' The whole of this book is virtually a reprint of the preface to his work, 'The R.C. Axiomata,' published in 1660" (Gardner). Heydon, der beschuldigt wurde, Sir Thomas Browne, Thomas Vaughan und andere Autoren plagiiert zu haben, ist heute aufgrund der Seltenheit seiner Werke fast vergessen. Er war jedoch eher ein synkretistischer Geist, der aus vielen Quellen Informationen zusammentrug, und wurde u.a. von Ezra Pound hoch geschätzt.

Wolfstieg 29 S. genannt, was mit unserem Exemplar übereinstimmt, von den Bibliotheken 30 S., nach der von The Getty Alchemy Collection gegebenen Kollation handelt es sich um ein w. Bl. Fehlen in Tl. 1 Bl. f4 (mit 2 weiteren Holzschn.-Diagrammen), das Porträt-Frontispiz (dieses in Faksimile eingebunden) u. das letzte w. Blatt.

Six parts in 1 vol., each part has separate title page and pagination. Variant with the first title as given above and the publisher's name Samuel Ferris. With full-page engraving and 3 (of 5) woodcut diagrams, including the author's horoscope. Extremely scarce work, the master work of the English Neoplatonist occult philosopher, Rosicrucian, astrologer and attorney J. Heydon. He was criticised as a plagiarist, but was rather a syncretic spirit, bringing together from a lot of sources the informations to sustain the RC movement. And he was kept in high esteem by Ezra Pound who introduces him as a 'master' in his Cantos, by Wynn Westcott who recommend his works to be studied, by Manly Hall and others. - Somewhat browned, some staining here and there, occasionally stronger, slight waterstaining in places; 1-2 small marginal wormholes at beginning. A few small marginal tears; 1st title slightly shaved at right and reinforced, minor letter losses and border supplied in ms.; and leaf f5 with rep. tear-out with word losses supplied in ms. Bound in calf around 1800 gilt, slightly rubbed and stained, 1 corner worn, skillful restorations to joints and head and tail of spine. Ms. ownership inscriptions to title and final leaf of part 1. For the index at the end of vol. 6 Gardner and Wolfstieg ask for 29 pages, which corresponds to our copy, whereas libraries mention 30 pages, according to The Getty Alchemy Collection a blank. Lacking portrait-frontispiece (bound in as facsimile), leaf f4 (with 2 further woodcut diagrams) and final blank.
