Eines von 200 Exemplaren der Ausgabe in Großfolio und mit den Tafelunterschriften in Golddruck dieses prachtvollen Werkes über die 'golden und metallisch glänzenden Vogelarten'. In insgesamt fünf Abschnitten werden Kolibris, Glanzvögel, Baumläufer und Paradiesvögel beschrieben. "In die ornithologische Illustration wurde der Farbendruck eingeführt von Jean Baptiste Audebert, der von dem reichen Naturaliensammler Gigot d'Orex als Zeichner angestellt war. Er stach und druckte seine Darstellungen meist selbst, so daß sie in dieser Hinsicht wohl die vollkommensten sind. Vor allem seine 'Oiseaux dorés', die erste Prachtdarstellung der Kolibri - in Gouache (recte: Ölfarben) statt in den Redoutéschen Lasurfarben und mit reichlicher Verwendung von Gold gedruckt - haben ihn alle Register seines Könnens ziehen lassen. Doch gleichen sie mehr einer Sammlung von Gemälden, denn von wissenschaftlichen Illustrationen" (Nissen S. 47). Audebert starb bereits im Jahr 1800, das Werk wurde von Vieillot fortgeführt und beendet. - Unbeschnittenes, breitrandiges Exemplar, die Schutzblätter aus Seidenpapier bis auf 1 (Paradiesvögel, Taf. 5) vollständig erhalten. Stellenweise leicht stockfleckig, meist nur die Ränder betroffen, die unbeschnittenen äußersten Blattränder teilweise etwas gebräunt.

Two volumes. First edition, one of two hundred copies in large folio with the captions printed in gold. With 190 fine (one double-page) colour-printed engraved plates after and by Audebert, partly finished by hand and many heightened with gold. "One of the most beautiful books of its era. It is the gold reflections of the plumage that render the book unique and wonderful" (Fine Bird Books). "The colours of the birds and their handsome appearance have evidently been the cause of their selection for inclusion in the book. The plates with the bird portraits are in beautiful colours; in this respect they are among the best colour prints found in ornithology" (Anker). Audebert died in 1800 just as the text was beginning to appear, and it was completed on the basis of his notes by Vieillot. - Uncut, wide margined copy. The protective tissue guards are completely preserved except for one (Birds of Paradise, Plate 5). Mild foxing, mainly to margins, the uncut outer edges of the leaves slightly browned in places. Bound in contemporary red half morocco, spines richly gilt; some rubbing and staining to covers, restored,l eather on joints and capitals professionally renewed and partly supplemented at the corners.
