Ein wegweisendes Werk icht nur für die Geschichte der Mineralogie und Metallurgie, sondern auch für die Paläontologie und Archäologie. Michele Mercati (1541-1593) war Leibarzt der Päpste Gregor XIII. und Clemens VIII. sowie Direktor des Botanischen Gartens des Vatikans. Er bildete eine der ersten organisierten Mineraliensammlungen unter der Schirmherrschaft von Papst Sixtus V. "The collection reflects the state of knowledge extant at that time and therefore includes objects of presumed magical or medicinal virtue as well as those which are correctly identified and described. The plates can scarcely be equalles for fidelity to originals and the exquisit care employed in their engraving and printing." (Sinkankas) - Teilw. etwas stockfleckig u. stellenweise etwas gebräunt.
