Levaillant's fundamental monograph on parrots "is, unwittingly, a part of the glories of Napoleonic France" (Fine Bird Books). Supplementary volumes with lith. plates were issued by Bourgot St. Hilaire in 1837-38 and by souancé in 1857-58. - Fine uncut and wide margined copy. Text evenly lightly browned, plates not affected, some foxing to protective tissue guards, plates and text only affected in margins; little maginal waterstaining to margins of first and last leaves of first vol. Plate 26 bound in upside-down. 20th cent. bookplate to pastedown and partly erased stamp of an ornithological library to free endpapers. Bound in contemp. red half-morocco, spines gilt; somewhat rubbed, inner hinges slightly loosened.
