Die ungewöhnlich flächig radierten Darstellungen von Maddalena Bouchard nach Zeichnungen von Cesare Ubertini betonen den malerisch-dekorativen Eindruck und stellen dagegen den wissenschaftlichen Anspruch etwas zurück. Sie wurden, wohl insbesondere deshalb, besonders in französischen Rezensionen kritisiert "d'une exécution fort médiocre" (Brunet). Dunthorne urteilt jedoch sehr positiv: "engraved in an unusually broad manner, well coloured with opaque colours, producing extremely decorative plates, noteworthy among which are those of melons, cucumbers, gourds, pineapple, aloes, tulips, datura &c." Bonelli hatte nur einen kurzen Teil von Band 1 verfasst, die übrigen Texte der Bände 1-5 stammen von Liberato Sabbati die Herausgabe besorgte Niccolo Martelli. Laut einem von Nissen eingesehenen Prospekt war eine Auflage von 300 Exemplaren vorgesehen, von denen nur wenige koloriert wurden. "It is not likely that this number was actually reached, certainly not for the later volumes (vols. 6-8 are very scarce)" (Stafleu-C.). Stafleu-C. notes that the proposed number of 300 copies, of which only a few were coloured, was probably not reached - especially not for the scarce vols. 6-8 that are also lacking here. - Engr. bookplates to pastedowns and small collector's stamp to margin of titles of the French architect C. Scattered light tanning, a few insignificant finger marks on the margins; the titles of vols. 2–3, as well as the preliminary sections and text of vol. 5, are loose; crease mark to final plate of vol. 1, the last two plates of vol. 3 with small single perforation to top margin, vol. 4 in places with faint water marks on the outer edge of the bottom margin, vol. 5 from plate 72 onwards with faint water stains in the bottom margin, becoming more pronounced from plate 88, plates 97-100 also with a little worming there.
