"Perhaps the greatest intellectual stride that it has ever been granted to any man to make" (Einstein). Edmund Halley ermutigte Newton zur Abfassung der "Principia" und übernahm auch weitgehend die Finanzierung des Druckes. Das letzte Blatt der Vorstücke mit von Edmund Halley gezeichnetem Lobgedicht "In viri praestantissimi D. Isaaci Newtone opus..." - "The 'Principia' is generally described as the greatest work in the history of science. Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler had certainly shown the way; but where they described the phenomena they observed, Newton explained the underlying universal laws. ... The same laws of gravitaion and motion rule everywhere; for the first time a single mathematical law could explain the motions of objects on earth as well as the phenomena of the heavens... the co-discoverer with Leibniz of the differential calculus, (Newton) is generally regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians of all time" (PMM, Printing and the Mind of Man, S. 96-97). "Newtons conclusions on gravity and the motion of the plantets established a conception of the universe that was unchallenged until Einstein" (Reichner in: Babson). - Exemplar mit dem Austauschblatt "Cancel P4", das das Blatt mit dem ursprünglich kopfstehenden Diagramm ersetzt, S. 261 irrtümlich nummeriert 262. - Teils gebräunt, in den Rändern unterschiedlich stockfleckig, wenig Seiten wie z.B. u.a. 19, 41, 209/10, 381, 383 mit kleinem Braunfleck, der entweder ca. 1-3 Buchstaben betrifft oder sich im unbedruckten Bereich befindet, Widmungsblatt "Illustrissimae Societati..." innen innen verstärkt, S. 69 und 129 mit unwesentlichen Schmutzflecken, S. 55/56 mit kleinem Papierausbruch im weißen Rand, kleiner restaurierte Randeinriß auf S. 357/358. Unserem Exemplar fehlt die zu dieser Erstausgabe gestochene Falttafel des Kometen ("Cometary orbit"), stattdessen ist der Nachstich dieser Falttafel mit der gestochenen Seitenzahl "465" aus der 2. Ausgabe von 1713 eingebunden (Format der Tafel: ca. 26,5:36 cm, etwas stockfleckig). - Provenienz: Titel mit 2 alten Besitzvermerken eines Servitenklosters; fliegender Vorsatz mit 1699 datiertem Vermerk "Ex Dono ac Munificentia R. P. Bartholomaei ...?"; deutsche Privatsammlung.

First edition. - With 1 folded plate (‘cometary orbit’ from the 2nd edition of 1713, see below) and numerous woodcut diagrams in the text. Copy containing the ‘Cancel P4’, which replaces the leaf with the diagram that was originally printed upside down, p. 261 erroneously numb. 262. - Partially tanned, varying degrees of foxing along the margins; a few pages, amongst others 19, 41, 209/10, 381 and 383, have a small brown stain affecting either approximately 1–3 letters or are located in an unprinted area; pages 69 and 129 have minor soiling; pp. 55/56 with a small tear in the white margin, a small, restored tear in the margin on pp. 357/358. Our copy is missing the engraved folding plate of the comet (“Cometary orbit”) belonging to this first edition; instead this plate which was re-engraved for the second edition of 1713 has been bound in bearing the engraved page number “465” (plate dimensions: approx. 26.5 × 36 cm, slightly foxed). Bound in a more or less contemporary Dutch (?) blind-stamped vellum binding with floral centre-pieces on both covers, manuscript title on the spine; some staining, corners slightly bumped, covers slightly warped. - Provenance: Title page with 2 old ownership inscriptions of a Servite monastery; flyleaf with an ‘ex dono’ note dated 1699; German private collection.
