Jahrhunderts mit goldgeprägtem Rückentitel, letzterer umgeben von goldgeprägter Einfassung; dreiseitiger Rotschnitt; gering angestaubt, vereinzelte Flecken, Deckel gering aufgebogen.

STC 22274a; Greg III, p. 1113. - Zweite Gesamtausgabe, enthaltend 'Hamlet', 'Romeo and Juliet', 'King Lear', 'Macbeth' und 'A midsummer nights dreame' und viele andere und damit eine der berühmtesten Werkausgaben der Weltliteratur. Die sogenannte "Second Folio"-Ausgabe, vorliegend Druckvariante Greg † (wohl die 2. von 6 bei Greg genannten Varianten). Enthält in diesem Druck auch John Milton's erstes gedrucktes Gedicht "An Epitaph on the admirable Dramaticke Poet, VV: Shakespeare... What needed my Shakespeare for his honor'd bones". - Zustand in Bindefolge: A1-(A6) angestaubt und etwas fingerfleckig, teils mit Quetschfalten, teils mit schmalen Wasserrändern, erstes Blatt "To the Reader" alt aufgezogen und mit Papierverlust der unteren weißen Ecke, Porträt mit schwachen Braunflecken, B6 (=S.23/24) und E3 (=S.53/54) jeweils kleines Loch mit Buchstabenverlust, X3 (=S.245/246) mit 1 Druckerschwärzefleck mit geringem Buchstabenverlust, d1 (S.37/38) (zum Zeitpunkt der Bindung ?) neu eingehängt oder aus einem anderen Exemplar passend eingebunden, q3r (=S.153) und q4v (=S. 156) Satzspiegel blassgrau gefärbt, ccc6-ddd2r (=S.411-414) gering fleckig, das Schlussblatt ddd4 (=S.419) vollständig aufgezogen die vorhandenen Einrisse somit sämtlich hinterlegt, in den Rändern fleckig sowie mit Einriß mittig und im unbedruckten Bereich lediglich die Rahmenlinien berührend. - Übriger Zustand: B5, E4, E5, F1, G3v, I4, L1r, N5, Q5, S4, T4-6, X5, c1-e4, m6, n1, q1-2, ii1, nn6v-oor, oo3v und oo4r, pp4-pp6, vv6-xx1 alle entweder mit geringen Einrissen, Papierfehler oder winzigen Flecken, Details auf Anfrage. - Insgesamt handelt es sich um ein gut erhaltenes und schönes Exemplar, das vom Format her eines der größeren Exemplare ist, die in den letzten Jahrzehnten versteigert wurden. - Provenienz: Dy(sart) Vermerk des alten schottischen Adelstitels; Sothebys, Printed Books from The library at Helmingham Hall, Sale June 14th, 1965 (Erwerber Maggs); seit 2 Generationen in deutschem Privatbesitz.

STC 22274a; Greg III, p. 1113. – Second Edition. One of the most famous editions of world literature. The so-called ‘Second Folio’, the present printing variant being Greg † (probably the 2nd of 6 variants mentioned by Greg). This edition also contains John Milton’s first published poem, ‘An Epitaph on the admirable Dramaticke Poet, VV: Shakespeare... What needed my Shakespeare for his honour’d bones’. - Condition as per sequence of gatherings: A1-(A6) dusty and with some fingermarks, some creasemarks, the first page ‘To the Reader’ has been mounted and with loss to lower white corner; the portrait with faint brown stains; B6 (pp. 23/24) and E3 (pp. 53/54) each have a small hole with little loss of letters; X3 (pp. 245/246) with 1 ink stain with little loss of letter, d1 (pp. 37/38) carefully re-inserted (at the time of binding?) or bound in from another copy to match, on q3r (p. 153) and q4v (pp. 156) the type area is coloured pale grey, ccc6-ddd2r (pp. 411-414) slightly stained, final leaf ddd4 (p. 419) fully mounted, the existing tears thus all backed, stained at the margins and with a tear in the centre and in the unprinted area merely touching the frame lines. - 18th century vellum binding, title gilt to spine and surrounded by gilt border, red edges, slightly dustained and minor staining, covers slightly warped. - Condition in general: B5, B6, E3, E4 and E5, F1, G3v, I4, L1r, N5, Q5, S4, T4–6, X5, m6, q1–2, ii, nn6v–oor, oo3v and oo4r, pp4–pp6, all with minor defects as tears, paper flaws or tiny stains, details on request. - Overall, this is a well preserved copy, which, in terms of size, is probably one of the larger examples to have been auctioned in recent decades. - Provenance: old note ‘Dy(sart)’; Sotheby’s sale 14 June 1965; in private German ownership for two generations.
