Die Tafeln von M. van der Gucht nach Zeichnungen von William Cowper. - Gebräunt, teilweise stockfleckig, stellenweise im Rand etwas angestaubt; die Tafeln teilw. mit hinterlegten Einrissen, die Hinterlegungen stellenweise etwas leimschattig sowie mit einigen Knickspuren, Tafeln 1-5 links unten mit etwas Bildverlust beschnitten, Taf. 1-2 mit auch teilw. ergänzten Ausschnitten, insbesondere im Genitalbereich; S. 17-36 im 2. Teil mit kl. Tintenfleck im Rand, bei 2 Bll. dort mit kl. Papierdurchbruch.

"The earliest important study in comparative morphology ... he established a new family of anthropoid apes standing between monkey and man, and recognized that man was probably a close relative of certain lower animals. Popularized as the 'missing link' ... Tyson did not foresee the theory of evolution; but his work contributed substantially to its formulation and in that sense he was a forerunner of Blumenbach, Buffon, Huxley and Darwin" (PMM). - Tanned, with some foxing, slightly dusty at the edges in places; the plates have some tears backed with paper, slightly glue-shadowed in places and some crease marks; plates 1–5 are trimmed at the bottom left with some loss of image; plates 1–2 also have cut-outs partially filled in, particularly in the genital area; pp. 17–36 in the second part with a small ink stain at the margin, causing a small hole there at 2 leaves. Bond in contemp. full-calf; worn, bumped and scuffed; spine and inner joints reinforced with linen; endpapers glue-shadowed and partially reinforced at the edges.
