Rare untitled Ptolemaic world map, the first to appear in Reisch's handbook 1503 and subsequent editions till 1535, and enlivened by individually designed windheads, one even with a pair of spectacles. "Here we find the first hint of knowledge of Columbus' discoveries on a printed map. Though Ptolemaic in its content, this map contains a legend which alludes to the discovery of the New World" (Suarez). - With watermark 'tête de boeuf' with small cross. - Uncol. Cleaned and sized, still light occasional spotting. Cut close to image, at sides just into the windheads. Repairs to splits and tears through centerfold and at old foldings.
