The first French edition of this important personal account of Cook's third voyage. The narrative is on the first 117 pages of text, followed by a life of Captain Cook. "Zimmermann, a native of Speyer was coxswain in the Discovery. From the start of the voyage he determined to keep a shorthand journal of the voyage and to retain it, despite the instructions which ... would in due course be forthcoming, demanding the surrender of all logs and journals ... His account ... is by no means free from errors, but it has an ingeniuousness and charm which differentiate it from the other accounts. His appreciation of Cook's character deserves to rank with that of Samwell. (Holmes) ... One of the earliest published narratives on Cook's Third Voyage and thus one of the earliest to describe the Hawaiian Islands" (Forbes 39 zur OA.). - Some foxing and browning throughout. First edition of this important French voyage to the South Sea. "Like all the voyages published by the French Government, this is a magnificent production" (Hocken). - Four text volumes and a large folio atlas. With 68 plates, 17 of them costume and ethnography plates coloured, 26 of the views printed as lithographs with an added tone, 25 of them printed on china paper mounted; the large folding map representing plate numbers 69-70 in the list of plates bound at the end of the last volume of text. - Text partly foxed and browned, some foxing and dampstaining to plates, few partly repaired marginal tears. The text volumes uncut and mostly unopened in original printed wrappers, and the supplementary fourth volume as issued in plain unprinted wrappers; atlas unbound. Forster hatte, zusammen mit seinem Sohn, an Cooks zweiter Reise als Naturwissenschaftler teilgenommen. Sein Bericht sollte ursprünglich Teil des offiziellen Berichts der Reise werden, wurde aber durch den Earl of Sandwich abgelehnt. "An account is given of the countries visited in 1772-75, but for the most part this work concerns the South Sea Islands. The observations concerning the 'human species' are especially interesting and give detailed information on the natives ... The last section presents a detailed evaluation of steps taken for the preservation of health on the voyage, notably the suggestions of James Lind" (Hill). Two volume of text and one atlas, with lith. map and 25 lith. plates. Arago's account of his voyage to Australia and the Pacific with the Freycinet expedition of 1817-1820. Arago's illustrated narrative preceded the official account by two years; and went on to become one of the best-selling voyage books of the nineteenth-century. The atlas include two Australian Aboriginal studies, a landscape in the Blue Mountains outside of Sydney Town, Hawaiian scenes and portraits, native rituals of the Pacific and archaic ruins encountered in the Marianas. - Slight foxing in places to text, plates uncut and partly foxed. Text in recent half-calf to old style, atlas in contemporary boards, with the publisher's printed label; foxed, rebacked.

Dann besuchte er Kalifornien und Hawaii (und) entdeckte im Januar 1817 den Romanzowarchipel" (Embacher 176). Teil 3 enthält die "Bemerkungen" A. v. Chamissos, der als Naturforscher an dieser zweiten russischen Weltumsegelung teilnahm. "This edition is in many ways superior to the subsequent editions, including the English translation. The three volumes are rich in early original source material on Alaska. The third volume is very important, as it has considerable scientific data, comparative vocabulary of the native languages and other pertinent, often unique, information. The colored plates of butterflies were not included in the Russian or English translation" (Lada-M.). - Etwas gebräunt u. fleckig.
First German edition. There were altogether three issues of this first edition. This is an example of the second issue with the text printed upon laid paper and the plates coloured incl. the double-page aquatint plates. - Some browning and slight spotting. Slightly later quarter black roan, gilt arms on cover of the Kings of Hanover, corners bumped, rebacked.

NHSM 186 & Henze IV, 68 (beide EA. von 1647), sowie zum Inhalt: Sharp p. 59 & Schilder, Australia unveilled p. 111. - Sehr seltene frühe Ausgabe eines der großen sensationellen Reise- und Entdeckerberichte aus der goldenen Zeit der holländischen Seefahrt in Südostasien und Ozeanien. Eines der ersten Bücher über Australien, zuerst 1647 erschienen und dann in rascher Folge in einigen Drucken verbreitet. So auch in vielen Sammelwerken wie Thevenot etc. enthalten. Nach Landwehr handelt es sich hier um den sechsten Einzeldruck der Schrift. Pelsaert - "Entdecker eines kleineren Teils der West-Küste Australiens" (Henze) - leitete die Expedition des holländischen Handelsschiffes 'Batavia', das am 4. Juni 1629 an den Riffen der vor der westaustralischen Küste liegenden 'Abrolhos'-Inseln (heute Wallabi-Inseln) strandete. 300 Überlebende konnten sich retten. Es kam jedoch zu einer gewaltsamen Meuterei, die mit Hinrichtung der Verantwortlichen endete. Nach Pelsaert wurde der südlichste Teil des Houtman-Abrolhos-Archipel in 'Pelsaert Island' benannt. Nach Henze IV, 69 befindet sich in dem Werk auch die erste Erwähnung von Termitenbauten in Australien. Der vorliegende Bericht fand, aufgrund seines dramatischen Inhalts und entsprechender anschaulicher Illustration, schnelle publizistische Verbreitung. - Gering gebräunt, stellenweise fingerfleckig.
Early printing of this highly important and famous travel account. The first edition appeared 1647. All early editions are very rare. The work relates the account of the expedition and the shipwreck of the famous 'Batavia' on the morning reef in the 'Houtman-Abrolhos', off the coast of Western Australia. "Pelsaert must be given credit for the first clearly established sighting of the mainland coast of the vicinity of Houtman Rocks"..."completes the discovery of west coast from vicinity of Houtman Rocks to Point Cloates" (Sharp p. 63 and 328).
The shipwreck found many survivors but was followed by a dramatic mutiny and the mutineers massacred over hundred men, women and children. Pelsaert who had returned to Jakarta to search for help, returned 4 months later to rescue the crew. The commander arrested the mutineers and executed the leaders. Some twenty years later due to the dramatic events around the expedition and shipwreck the account of the 'Batavia' became a popular Dutch sensational story, that went through many editions. Johann Janssonius published the first printing in 1647 and it was quickly reprinted and included in large travel collections. According to Landwehr this is the 6th separate printing. A re-edition of the second edition published by Hartgers. - Slight browning, some thumbing. Simple marbled paper wrappers. Recent calf box.
