Der größte Teil seines Weges führte durch Gebiete, die Europäer bis dahin nicht betreten hatten" (H.). - Leicht gebräunt, stellenweise etwas stärker, und gering fleckig. Fehlt jeweils der Vortitel. Bemerkenswertes Archiv von Herbert Benjamin Edwardes (1819-1868) und seiner Frau Emma. - Darunter das gemeinsame Reisetagebuch von der Reise von Southampton nach Indien in den Jahren 1851-1853. Edwardes war Verwalter der Provinz Punjab in British-India  und spielte eine entscheidende Rolle in den Kriegen gegen die Sikhs. -

He used the name Masson as a pseudonym, likely after having deserted from the East India Company Army. The plates show views of Jalalabad, Ballabagh, Kalat, the caves at Bamian, the Citadel of Kabal and Istalif. - Some foxing in places, slight browning throughout, ms. bookshelf number. Book-plate of Edward Smith-Stanley (1799-1869), 14th Earl of Derby, prime minister to all three endpapers. Bound in brown-red contemporary calf by J. First edition, very rare. Already in the 1760's, Saussure's became interested in the Mont-Blanc. After the first successful ascent in 1786 by Pacard and Balmat, Saussure and his expedition followed in August of 1787 as the third (accompanied by Balmat), but the first with scientific ambitions. This third expedition became enormously important for the development of science due to the remarkable observations made by Saussure, concerning mineralogy and geology as well as magnetism and electricity in the atmosphere. According to Darmstaedter, "...an epoch-making ascent of this mountain, which introduces alpine tourism and at the same time is of importance due to the scientific results achieved". A frontispiece mentioned by Perret is not recorded in any other copy we traced, neither in auction trade nor in KVK. - Slight foxing or browning in places. Bound in contemporary wrappers, incomplete and damaged.

"He travelled extensively in the Himalayan region, and crossed twice into Tibet ... He also visited Ladakh (Y.)." The plates with views, profiles and geographical, anthropological, zoological, botanical etc. illustrations. Most of the zoological plates are in fine contemporary colour. - Some browning and foxing, stronger in places, here and there minor marginal tears; small tears to folds of 2 maps, off-setting from text onto 2 zoological plates in atlas vol. 2; blind stamp to each title: "Boston Society of Natural History" (1830–1948).
