Waldseemüller Map presented to the Library of Congress

Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel presented the 500 year old Waldseemüller Map to the Library of Congress during her visit. It stems from the German cartographer Martin Waldseemüller. Published in 1507, this map used the name ‘America’ for the recently discovered continent for the first time. A scaled down variant of this large-format map was used by Waldseemüller for his Ptolemy edition of 1513.
