First edition of this fascinating work. With engr. title and 243 engr. plates with plants set in or floating above landscape backgrounds. "The plates are as curious as their subjects. They commonly present the plants far larger than life, oranges huge as pumpkins, cyclamens with heavy corms floating lightly in mid-air, gentle geraniums grown into giant trees. The effect is obtained through sketching in classical or idyllic or mountainous little landscapes below" (Hunt). - Some browning, some foxing here and there; upper margin of half-title torn off and restored, slight velvet discoloured waterstaining with small paper flaws to inner margins of first leaves (until p. 100), lower white corner of plate 118 torn off, margin at side of plate 133 (on back) and 2 text leaves strengthened, lower margin of plate 155 and 156 torn off (touching neatline) and repaired. Bound in blindtooled calf around 1900, spine gilt, some rubbing, corners scuffed, front joint repaired with leather strip.
