The Champlain-Duval Map

Rare map based on Champlain, "the first truly scientific cartographer of North America" (B. 160), depicting the Eastern part of Canada and the United States between southern Greenland, "Floride" and the Great Lakes. Only one proof copy of 1616 is known in the John Carter Brown Library, which also supplied evidence that Duval could acquire the original plate. This one was first reworked by him with several changes and additions in 1653. A second ed. was prepared in 1664 with the date changed, and part of his address erased; our copy in a variant of the third state described by Burden: here with "Nle (!) Escosse" and not "Nau Escosse" in Acadia. "There was a total of six states. All are rare" (B.). - Contemp. col. in outline. Minor browning and light spotting in places, slight marginal waterstaining. Repairs to small tear at both ends of centerfold affecting engraved area.

Zustände). - Seltene Karte, basierend auf den Entdeckungen des ersten Europäers in dieser Region, Samuel de Champlain, "Father of New France". Es existiert von ihm nur ein unvollendeter Probedruck von 1616, aber nachweislich konnte Duval diese Platte erwerben u. publizierte sie erstmals 1653 mit zahlreichen zusätzl. Ortsnamen. Laut Burden können jetzt von 1616 bis 1677 insgesamt 6 Zustände nachgewiesen werden, vorliegendes Expl. in dem von Burden genannten 3. Zustand, aber mit "Nle (anstatt 'Nau') Escosse" in Akadien. - Gering gebräunt u. tlw. leicht fleckig, stellenweise schwach wasserrandig. Bugeinriss an beiden Enden bis in den Bildrand hinterlegt.
