Third enlarged edition; very rare. With engr. title, 1 large engr. folding map, 4 woodcut plates, 8 (2 full-page) text engravings and 13 woodcuts in the text. - As usually, without the separately published world map of 1655. - Marginal browning to all pages, marginal waterstaining to part 2 and 3. Bound in mod. full calf.

"He ... brought about a revolution in navigational science, which for the first time he based on mathematical principles" (PMM). "Added to the third edition is the 'Haven finding art' of Stevin" (Cox). "World map on engraved title page is one of the first to mention Virginia" (Sabin). - Die Faltkarte (mit kl. Einriss unten) ist die "Particular Platt, for sailing to the Iles of Azores"; die einzeln erschienene Weltkarte von 1655 fehlt wie meist. - In den Rändern gebräunt, 2. u. 3. Teil wasserrandig, wenige S. mit hinterlegtem Randeinriss.
