Rare first edition. With 4 large folding plates. Universally considered to be the birth certificate of Egyptology. "This publication marked the turning point in the decipherment of the hieroglyphs, even though Champollion's work was still at a very early stage" (Blackmer). - Carefully cleaned copy with faint remnats of waterstaining, somewhat stronger to first leaves. Plates I-III on bluish paper with uniform watermark, paper of plate IV somewhat stronger and with different watermark. Bound by Lobstein-Laurenchet in excellent morocco with filet borders, gilt title to spine, top edge gilt, housed in marbled slipcase. - Enclosed: 1. (Reprint of the same with preface of H. Jean-François Champollion (1790-1832) enthüllt hier erstmals seine Entdeckungen über das hieroglyphische Alphabet und gibt die Übersetzung mehrerer Namen von ägyptischen Königen und Königinnen an, die er durch die dreisprachige Inschrift des Steins von Rosette entziffern konnte. Eine ausführliche Erläuterung folgte im April 1824 als 'Zusammenfassung des Systems der Hieroglyphen im Alten Ägypten', deren Tafelteil im vorliegenden Konvolut enthalten ist. - Behutsam gereinigtes Exemplar mit schwachen Resten von Wasserrand, anfangs jedoch stärker.
