With de Bry's Version of Le Moyne's Map

Mit 2 gest. Titeln, 44 Textkupfern sowie 1 doppelblattgr. u. eingefalt. Kupferkarte, alles koloriert u. teilw. goldgehöht. 3 Bll., 30 S., 1 nn. Bl., XLII num., 12 (statt 15) nn. Bll. Mod. brauner Maroquinbd. mit etwas Vergoldung.

First edition of the second part of the "Great voyages". With 2 engr. titles, double-page and folded engraved map after J. Le Moyne de Morgues, and 44 text engravings, all attractively coloured and partly heightened in gold. - "Despite the fact that this map was not very accurate its influence was considerable... Most of the information on the map is derived from Indian sources and not French ones" (Burden). "It does show Port Royal (Portus Regalis) for the first time on a printed map" (Goss). - Some browning and spotting, heavier in places; some waterstains here and there, marginal tears and corner tear-offs repaired. First engr. title trimmed, remargined, and completely reinforced; some marginal fraying and marginal repairs to following 3 leaves. Dedication possibly supplemented from another copy, also shaved and remargined at top (with small ms. supplies to first line). Ink scribbling to margin of index, leaf XX with old underlining, H3 with marginal note. Second engr. title with small rep. tear and 2 small holes at center, also completely reinforced. Plate 8 mounted on a text sheet reprinted on old paper. 4 engravings narrow margined at right and 5 slightly shaved. Map slightly stained, with some restorations (small image loss at lower centerfold supplemented), narrow margined resp. slightly shaved and at top remargined. According to Crawford lacking 1 leaf of gathering H (before H2 recte H3; colophon), also K1 (errata sheet) and final blank. In our and some other copies the "Parergon continens" begins on leaf K and the following leaf with sign. K2 (the "K" on a small mounted paper label). Despite these defects, a very fine copy with all engravings, initials and ornamental pieces in attractive later colouring. Bound in recent brown morocco with modest gilt.

"This part gives an account of the unfortunate expeditions of the French Huguenots to Florida under Jean Ribaut (1562); René de Laudonnière (1564); and Dominique de Gourgues (1567)" (Church). Mit der später vielfach kopierten Florida-Karte nach J. Le Moyne de Morgues. - Etwas gebräunt u. fleckig, vereinzelt stark, stellenw. auch etwas wasserfl., einige Randeinrisse hinterlegt u. einzelne Eckabrisse ergänzt. Erster gest. Titel beschnitten, rundum angerändert u. insgesamt verstärkt; bei den 3 folgenden Bll. Blattränder etwas ausgefranst u. Randläsuren repariert, das Widmungsbl. wohl aus einem anderen Exemplar ergänzt, außerdem oben angeschnitten u. angerändert (mit kl. Nachzeichnungen in der ersten Zeile). Index mit kl. Tintenkritzelei, Bl. XX mit alter Unterstreichung, H3 mit Randnotiz. Zweiter gest. Titel mit kl. rep. Einriss u. 2 kl. Löchern mittig, ebenfalls ganz verstärkt. Kupferstich 8 auf ein auf altem Papier nachgedrucktes Textbl. montiert; 4 Kupf. rechts knapp be- u. 5 leicht angeschnitten; die Kte. leicht fleckig, mit Restaurierungen (u.a. mittig kl. Bildverlust ergänzt), knapp be- u. teilw. die Einfassung auch leicht angeschnitten sowie oben angerändert. Fehlen nach Crawford 1 Bl. der Lage H (vor H2 recte H3; Kolophon), außerdem K1 (das Erratablatt "Mendae quaedam...") u. 1 w. Bl. am Schluss. Bei unserem Ex. wie auch teilw. bei Vergleichsexemplaren beginnt das "Parergon continens" jedoch auf 1 Bl. mit Sign. K und das Folgebl. hat die Sign. K2 (das "K" auf einem kl. montierten Papierschildchen). Trotz der genannten Mängel sehr ansprechendes Exemplar, bei dem auch alle Initialen u. ornamentalen Zierstücke koloriert sind.
