First edition of this important collection of 55 letters and documents dated between 1577 and 1604, very rare. The first 636 pages deal with Japan, including 8 reports covering some 400 pages by Frois, other letters on Japan by Cabral, Organtino etc. Valignano is represented with 'Litterae Iaponiae' and 'Admiranda Regni Sinensis'. Some 200 pages are devoted to India ("Mogor") and "Indie Orientalis", mostly ex Goa. Smaller sections on Peru, and the Philippines. It seems that this volume was originally intended as a companion to Nutius' 1605 edition of Maffei's 'Historiarum Indicarum', but no doubt the fact that Hay's collection is complete in itself and led to its separation from an early date. - Slight browning and spotting in places, minor marginal worming to title and last leaves, owner's inscription and stamp to title. Contemp. full calf with blindtooled or gilt covers and gilt embossed edges; rebacked, joints somewhat cracked, one corner of front cover restored, small hole to back cover, ties removed.

Wurde von Nuyts auch als Bd. 2 von Maffeis "Historiarum Indicarum libri XVI." ausgegeben, daher in der Bogensignatur mit "Tom. ij." bezeichnet. - Etwas gebräunt, stellenweise gering fleckig, Titel u. letzte Bll. mit kl. Wurmspur im Rand, Titel mit hs. Besitzeintrag des Jesuitenklosters Würzburg u. Stempel der 'Utrechtsche Zendingsvereeniging' auf der Druckermarke.
