Vol. 1 and 2 (of a set of 3). Rare first edition of this early and much sought-after description of the Philippines and the role of the Franciscans. With 2 engr. vignettes and 1 engr. initial. Printed on rice paper (except first 24 ll. of vol. 1). Vol. 1 is exclusively dedicated to the Philippines. "El primer tomo de esta magnífica obra es de gran importancia para Filipinas. Trata de una manera completísima la geografía del archipiélago, dando una descripción detallada de las costas de las islas... no es menos completa la parte relativa á la historia natural, razas, usos, costumbres, religión, etc., de los filipinos y de la historia de la dominación española" (Pardo de Tavera). It is said that mariners used the book as a kind of "Derrotero" which fact might explain the rarity of the volume. The famous Murillo Velarde has contributed a "Sentir" of more than 10 pp. to the prelims. Vol. 2 continues the history of the Franciscan custody of S. Gregorio on the Philippines for the yers 1583-85, and the establishment of its follower province at Rome, 1586-90. The 3rd vol., not present here, is exclusively dedicated to China and Japan. - Slightly browned, some staining and marginal dampstaining in places. Marginal repairs to both titles, the first one partly remargined, the 2nd with a longer backed tear affecting text. Paper overall a bit fragile and margins brittle, therefore some marginal fraying and partly rep. tears esp. pp. 107 and 467 in vol. 1 with marginal tear-off (without text losses) resp. long marginal tear into text, p. 479 with hole with small letter losses; some pages with wormholes (some also with loss of letters). Regarding the difficult paper qualitiy still a good copy bound in contemp. yellowish limp vellum with ties, somewhat stained. Preserved in recent slipcase.

Bd. 1 beschäftigt sich ausschließlich mit den Philippinen, Bd. 2 setzt die Geschichte des Franziskanerordens auf den Philippinen fort, berichtet ferner von den ersten spanischen Missionaren, die Macau und China besuchten, zusammen mit zahlreichen Informationen über Cochinchina, Borneo, Malakka und den Pazifik. Der hier nicht vorliegende Bd. 3 von 1744 ist Japan und China vorbehalten. Bis auf die ersten 24 Bll. in Bd. 1 auf Reispapier gedruckt. - Leicht gebräunt u. stellenw. etwas fleckig, vereinzelt in den Rändern etwas wasserrandig. Beide Titel mit rest. Randläsuren, der 1.teilw. angerändert, der 2. mit längerem hinterlegtem Randeinriss bis in die Schrift. Papier insgesamt etwas fragil u. Blattränder brüchig, daher stellenw. etwas ausgefranst od. mit teils rep. Randläsuren, Bd. 1 stärker betroffen. In Bd. 1 S. 107 mit Randausriss bis an u. S. 467 mit langem Randeinriss bis in die Schrift, S. 479 mit Loch im Satzspiegel mit kl. Buchstabenverlusten, in Buchmitte einige S. mit Wurmgängen (teils mit Buchstabenverlust).
