"Africae nova descriptio". Altkol. Kupferstich-Karte von W. Blaeu. Mit floraler Kartusche und reicher figürlicher sowie maritimer Staffage; eingefasst von 3 Bildleisten: seitl. je 5 Eingeborenenpaare, oben 9 kl. Ansichten, darunter Algier, Tunis und Kairo, jeweils ausgem. 41:55 cm.

"This is one of the most decorative and popular of all the early maps of Africa" (Norwich). "It first appeared in an atlas in this second state in Blaeu's Atlantis Appendix of 1630" (Betz). Third state with Blaeu's name in the title cartouche changed to "Guiljelmo Blaeuw" and with additional hachuring around the sea monster (cf. Betz); our copy from the French edition 1643-50. - Contemporary col. Light browning and spotting. Centerfold with some paper agglutinations and repaired tear at bottom affecting image, there some discolouration from paste; small paperflaw at top left. Cut to platemark at right.
